Hello,
Ben is currently on the road,
visiting in Lake Tahoe. He is having the usual difficulties with AOL,
which doesn't want to let him send email from someone else's computer.
Although he is able to read and send individual emails, AOL won't let him send
to the whole MailCall list (about 300 people). So I am going to try to
forward the MailCalls for him for a while. Bear with me. If you
have any news, continue to send it to Ben at Ben517@aol.com, and he will forward items to
me. If we get confused and misplace your news, just send it
again.

Dear Ben:
From the KIA dates provided by Stevin Oudshoom, we
know that all our troopers buried in the Netherlands were killed in the attacks
from Bergstein and Schmidt, Germany. Some, like Jim Birder, were returned to the
States for reburial here. There is a lot on the website about that disastrous
diversionary attack.
My best, Howard Hensleigh

Monument
Dear Catherine:
We have reached the goal of raising $2,500. as the
517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team’s contribution to the erection of a
monument honoring the airborne invasion and liberation of Southern
France.
We now need all the details we can get regarding
the location and specifications for the monument. We will transmit all the
information you send us to our membership. I understand that the French
Government required our commitment to the project before proceeding. We also
should have the name of the French Government official responsible for the
project, so we may be in touch with him/her directly. You may inform him/her of
our commitment to the project and that we are prepared to remit our contribution
to the French Government when we know the details.
We wish you, your father and other family members
a joyous holiday season.
Highest regards, Howard Hensleigh, President,
517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team Association, Inc.

JOE CALDER
Up until today, I was of the opinion that
Bob Woodhull was killed by a box
mine. Anyway, as Paul Harvey would say " Here is the rest of the story". On the day before Bob was
killed. the Battalion CP was in what was left of house and basement. Seems to
me it was on a little bit of a hill.
I had received a box from my mother with some goodies and a pair of socks. I was sitting next to Bob when
I opened it. I sure I shared its
contents with those present, including Howard, if he was there. Bob said to me " Let me have those socks, I need
them more than you". I probably
said something to the effect, " Hell no!
I do not have to
go out on that attack tonight, If I
give them to you, you might get killed and some Jerry will end up with my
new socks." Needless to
say, I have often though to about
this and wished that I had given the socks to Bob. He was really fine fellow and a good
friend. Another story about Bob. It was when we were in the hotel on the
outskirts of Sospel. We were getting
a lot of incoming artillery fire. Bob and I were sitting on the bottom steps of a circular staircase. I
recall, it had a glass dome. I
said, "Bob those Jerry
artillery observers must not be too good if they
can't hit this building." I don"t think that the words were out of
my mouth when we were showered with
glass. They had hit the dome.
