Subject: MAIL CALL NO. 820 517TH PRCT--JANUARY 1, 2005
Hello,

I'm just back from a trip out West and am now on my own computer where I can do more things. Bob sent out Mail Call while I was away and so I think mail is up to date and if you think we missed anything  send it again.
I received much regular mail while away with my old address. The PO would like me to notify all that my new address is 70 Pleasant St. Cohasset, Ma. 02025.
The Kissimmee reunion is January 23. Register now. It is getting late... in more ways than one.

Dear Mr. Barrett,

I am happy to report to you that dad is alive and kicking (not too hard but kicking all the same).  I have had cause to go back and read various accounts of the 517th lately due in large part to the anniversary of the "Battle of the Bulge."  I have been reading some of the emails generated between you, Mr. Havill and Mr. Hensleigh (I apologize...I don't have the proper rank to attach).  Dad isn't in the greatest of health these days (he is 86) but he still has his independence (no surprise there).  He has been a little reluctant to discuss his combat time up until the last few years but seems to be ok with his involvement now.  I have a great deal of respect for dad and all that he has been through.  I would imagine that he is much the same today as he was back then.  Hard when he needs to be, always witty and engaging when he can be.  Certainly someone who I look up to.

I will see him later this afternoon and pass along that I have attempted to make contact with you.  Dad has a bit of an ill view of computers but I'll be happy to correspond for him whenever possible.  You can also reach me at home at flavecarpenter@hotmail.com.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Flave J. Carpenter, Jr., EDFP, CCD

To all friends, families and troopers of the 517th

I hope all had a Merry Christmas and may you have a Happy New Year. I wish all the best for the coming year.

We all have special thanks for Bob and Ben Barrett, Bob Christie, and all of 517th Santa's elves for all that they have done to keep the Thunderbolt published and keeping everyone informed of the good and the bad during the last year.

My apologies-I only returned to my home the day after Christmas and I am just starting the 2004 Christmas cards. So if yours arrives in July, Happy July 4th. I am still available at both the Oregon address and the San Luis Obispo, CA address, but only one place at a time.

I had planned to be at the FL gathering-but, it was not to be. Have a good "jump."

    HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

Dad,

I ran across this posting, looking for info about Sgt. Charles Burton, killed in Korea in 1952.

Burton is listed on the Dec 44 roster with the HQ Co, 1st Battalion.

Ben I would like to purchase a copy of Merles book,  Please tell me how
to go about it.  I saw some where that if we members of the 517 were
interested we could get it at 1/2 price.  Tom McAvoy   Also Ben I
noticed in the summer issue of the Thunderbolt that 3 of my friends KIA
were not listed at all, They were Arlton Beardon from I Company KIA in
Italy, (From ALABAMA, ) Next Jack Hitchcock I Company KIA in France ( from
Indianapolis, Indiana ) (Bob Nye formerly of the 517)and I went out to see
Jacks Wife and family (Mother) in Indianapolis after he and I ran across
each other by chance in Indpls, (actually during the War, We both were
convalescing from war injuries) They had received word that day of Jack's
death in France, Next , a Medic named Simpkins from H. company, KIA in
Italy,  I  ran 6 miles to get an ambulance for him and Jim Degnan to get
them to a hospital and rode with them to the hospital and Simpkins died
on the way from serious, serious, leg injuries.   A fourth name I shall
have to remember and send to you.  Tom  McAvoy

Ben--I haven't seen anything on the website about John Jewell. Some of the members of F. Co. started to get worried about him and did some investigating because he just seemed to have dropped out of sight.  They found out that he had passed away.  I got on the computer and found an obituary published in the Pioneer Press 6/27/04.

John L. "Jack" Jewell-retired Attorney, Age 81 of Stillwater, passed away June 24,2004.  He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian.  He is survived by a brother-in-law, a niece, and several other relatives. Memorial service was held on the following Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stillwater. A private interment  at the Fairview Cemetery.  Memorials to Lakeview Hospice 651-439-5511.
We in Co F-2Nd Bat. lost 3 of our member in 2004. John Terrell, Walt Rommel and John Jewell. We will miss them.
They just never missed a reunion and they were such good people to know.

Comments: I am the grandson of SSGT. Edmund Powless, I Company.  My grandfather has 5 daughters, 7 grandkids, and a handful of great grandkids. He's retired from a lifetime at the huron cement co. Now he serves as the deacon at Holy Apostles church in Oneida, WI.  Anyone with any info about him would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to find out everything I can about this heroic unit so I can pass down the info to my family. Your bravery and sacrifice will never be taken for granted, thank you all.
