Ben:

Welcome back. You were missed, but Bob did a good job of keeping things going.

Note to Flave J. Carpenter, Jr. Your message in Mail Call was a 2005 gift to all of us who knew your father. He earned his stripes and bars with the 517th, remedying the mistake of the Infantry School in not recognizing a born leader of men. As he left us in Joigny after the fighting was over, he cracked a few ribs at his farewell dinner by being "witty and engaging." At Manhay he got the lead elements of I Company to the objective after our own artillery gave us a taste of what they could do to us, virtually wiping out Stott’s platoon.

A number of years ago I tried to get in touch with him while he was playing golf. I did talk with your mother who filled me in on the rest of his illustrious Army career. As you know, it started in Pear Harbor.

No apologies needed for not attaching rank to any names on our roster. During the War we used to say we were bucking for Pfc., i.e. poor foolish civilian, although some substituted another word for the middle one. After discharges, retirement parades, etc. we have all reached that rank.

We appreciate your interest and what we trust will be a link to your Dad. We have missed him and will look forward to keeping in touch.

Hi:
As you probably know for the past year I haven't been corresponding often due to my health; however, I am sharing the e-mail address I used to correspond with Chico in hopes it will still get through to him:  This was the past two years that I didn't get to send Christmas cards.

Welcome home Ben!  Glad to have you aboard again. Your son Bob did a super job while you were away.

Tom.... Just send Merle $18.00 to Merle W. McMorrow, 917 Midway Drive, Bismarck, ND 58501. Received my copy yesterday. It is a real good read and will bring back some fond memories.  Or.... send him an Email order.   Enjoy this NEW YEAR!

Tom McAvoy,

Ben I would like to purchase a copy of Merles book,  Please tell me how
to go about it.  I saw some where that if we members of the 517 were
interested we could get it at 1/2 price. Tom McAvoy   Also Ben I
noticed in the summer issue of the Thunderbolt that 3 of my friends KIA
were not listed at all, They were Arlton Beardon from I Company KIA in
Italy, (From ALABAMA, ) Next Jack Hitchcock I Company KIA in France ( from
Indianapolis, Indiana ) (Bob Nye formerly of the 517) and I went out to see
Jacks Wife and family (Mother) in Indianapolis after he and I ran across
each other by chance in Indpls, (actually during the War, We both were
convalescing from war injuries) They had received word that day of Jacks
death in France, Next , a Medic named Simpkins from H. company, KIA in
Italy,  I  ran 6 miles to get an ambulance for him and Jim Degnan to get
them to a hospital and rode with them to the hospital and Simpkins died
on the way from serious, serious, leg injuries.  A fourth name I shall
have to remember and send to you?? Tom  McAvoy
