Hello,

We have had many request from relatives and friends for information about 517 members. I try to answer all requests and do sometimes make relevant connections but with so many inquires unless I get immediate replies, it is difficult to remember who sought what information.. It would be a big help if members would check the guestbook once in awhile to see if they could help.
Just click on.

Comments: My grandfather was Eugene 'chop chop' Mars a medic in HQ Company, 2nd Battalion. Thank you all for your dedication and service to our country. You have made it what it is today and what many are fighting to keep. You have been a family to my grandfather while you served and throughout the years. If there are any memories of him you can pass on to me and my family I would be very grateful. Thank you.

"Chop Chop" is a very popular member of the 517  and nearly everyone must have met Eugene at reunions. Someone must have stories about him.

Ted Crawford
Ben,

I just prepared a DVD movie of an interview with my father and mother that I did in 1997.  (PFC Robert L. Crawford,  A Company). I notified you that dad passed away July 10, 2004.  In the 1 ½ hour interview dad mentions an French orphan boy of about 13 years that befriended  A company and traveled through most France with them. He said that he was invaluable as an interpreter.  Dad held a great deal of affection for the young man and spoke of him several times as I was growing up. He mentioned him during the interview but I never got his name.  I was curious if any one remembered him or what happened to him?

Just a note to all who read this….take the time and sit down with a video camera this weekend and tell your life story from birth, and of relatives, where you lived, why and how you fell in love, why you went into the military, that the $50 in extra pay was what made you crazy enough to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, where you trained, where you traveled, where you fought, Why we fought, what happened out there, where you were when you learned it was over, what happened from then until now. Who your brothers and sisters are, who your parents were, who your children are, and most of all …What you want to tell future generations!  We were so fortunate that we did this in 1997.  I was able to give this to the whole family as a Christmas present on our first Christmas without Dad.  His great Grandchildren and their children will know him and get a message from Robert and Jean Crawford.

Ben-

I appreciate your willingness to share information and would be honored to be added to your roster (my home address is flavecarpenter@hotmail.com ).  I will be visiting more with dad to reconstruct his memories so that more can have the opportunity to better understand the sacrifices that enable us to enjoy the freedoms we have today.  Look forward to hearing more from you soon.

Sincerely,

Flave Jr.

Not too sure about Kissimmee.  Andrew has trouble making long car trips (about 9 hours driving).  If we make the trip would probably not attend all the attractions scheduled.  My daughter lives an hour away so would probably just do the day visiting at the reunion and return to daughter's at night.  Will just have to wait and see.

Andrew has congestive heart failure and any exertion leaves him very tired.

Ben, I trust you had a fine holiday, as we did here, and that I will be
able to exercise my
"honorary 517 status" sometime during the coming year BUT I'm afraid it
will not be at
mini-reunion in Kissimmee later this month.
I have a scheduling conflict so will have to miss the first in several
years.

I appreciate your efforts in holding the "gang" together for if it were
not for troopers like you
I'm afraid our ranks would be even thinner than
they are now.

I talked to Clark Archers' wife and Clark is not doing as well this year
as he did last. He, like many of us, have some days better than others.
So I rather doubt if he shows up in Kissimmee.

Keep me on the distribution list for Mail Call
as I enjoy reading about troopers from the 517
PIR for, as you know, the '05 and the 517 worked very closely some 61
years ago this month, in the Trois Ponts Area. I remember well when
Colonel Graves came to the 505 CP in Broome, above Trois Ponts, to get
Col Ekman to brief him on our troop's dispositions.

Enough remembering ---- Happy New Year and may you have a good 2005.
