Ben --
I meant to notify you sooner that Dad's email address (herbjeff@bellsouth.net) has been
cancelled. As you may recall, Dad passed away in September. Prior to
his passing, I retrieved his Mail Call for him and we often read them together
while he elaborated on memories of his days with the 517th.
If possible, I would like to remain on the 517th Mail Call
list. Please add my email address: gaildoug@bellsouth.net
Though I've never met any of Dad's friends personally,
I've heard tales of many of you through the years and would enjoy continuing to
be included as an "extended member" of the 517th family. Also, I would
greatly enjoy (as would other members of my family) hearing any stories that you
may recall of my Dad.
Also, in going through Dad's things, I have found that he
has quite a few pictures that I think some of your members would enjoy
seeing. Hopefully, I can scan them and send them in the near
future.
Sincerely,
Gail Jeff Douglas

Ben, First, let me say that you must have received my e-mail
concerning
Gene Mars. It appeared in your mail call
#829.
In Monday's edition of the Baltimore Sun appeared an
obituary of a
John L. Randall. I am quoting from the obit write-up:
"John L. Randall, decorated Army Paratrooper who fought in several
key
WWII battles.... served with the 82nd Airborne Division's 517th PCT.
He
served in Sicily, Italy, France and Germany.....Battle of the
Bulge.......
His parachute wings were topped with a gold star,
indicating a combat jump
into Normandy......" Unquote.
Could this be the same Col.
John Randall listed in our roster, dated
, May 31, 2004? Some of the items in
the write-up do not jive with our
history. The write-up included his picture.
Since I do not have a
printer/scanner for my Web-TV, I cannot forward the
picture, but I will
mail it to you under separate cover.
Jim Royer, Hq. 3rd.
**************
I have received several inquiries and emails that do not believe jive
with our history. I used to depend on our historian , Clark Archer, for final
authority but Clark has medical problems lately and I do not want to add
additional burdens on him. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the history of
the 517 than I have can let us know if any member of the 517th PIR at any time
served in combat in Africa, Sicily or Normandy as a member of the 517 or any
other unit and later transferred to the 517.

Comments: Over
the last 20 plus years, I have served as the National Historian for the 82d
Airborne Division Association. Several years ago I came across some items that
once belonged to PVT Arthur L. Markle. I believe he was a member of 3rd
Battalion's Co. I. I also believed he was a Pathfinder in the Southern France
operation. He also was awarded a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. I would like to
hear from anyone who knew him. Thank you!

We do have Arthur L Markle on our 1944 Christmas roster
and he was awarded a Silver Star.--Ben

Dear friends and relatives. Our e-mail address was out of action from about 31
Dec to about 6 Jan, due to a changeover to more modern equipment . As a
consequence of the changeover, our address was dumped . I didn't know this for
about a week . So if you sent us any mail during that period, we did not
receive it. Please repeat anything of significance( Especially , any Mail Calls,
Ben). In A/bbl, Bob and Garnet Dalrymple
