Hi Ben:

In regards to the posting from Jim Royer regarding John L Randall and being a part of the invasion of Normandy another answer is that it could be an error.  When I originally started to find out about my Dad’s (Nathan Rubenstein, HQ Co. 2nd Bn.) WWII days on his DVD-214 (discharge) papers it said that he was in the invasion of Normandy.  Being that my Dad started out at Camp Toccoa and was with many of the men from the beginning to the end we know that my Dad did not jump into Normandy.  Throughout the researching process in addition to several of the men in the 517th PRCT telling me that Dad could not have jumped I also inquired at the Missouri Personnel Records Center and my Dad’s discharge papers where taken to other parts of the government they came back with an official order to me changing is DVD 214 that he was not at the Invasion of Normandy.  (Of course there was no way he could have been there because he enlisted on May 23 l943 and that would not correspond with his training and the Normandy Invasion.

I don’t have any idea if some of the men in the 517th would have been in the Invasion of Normandy or not but in my Dad’s case it was just a simple error.  Considering how the records were kept 60 years ago it is not surprising that errors where made.

I just thought I would let Jim Royer know what I found out about my Dad even though his Discharge Papers showed otherwise!

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in Florida.

Have a great Day.

Chris Lindner

Hey, Ben -

Re:  the possible discrepancies between an obituary and the unit history -
Though I certainly don't know the parties in question, I'll point out that obit information is usually provided by survivors and can be in error but well-intentioned.  Before I started hanging out with you guys, I wouldn't have known what Dad (Allan Johnson 596) did in the war.  I consider myself a bit better-educated these days.
I know errors can be maddening - you all gave so much, and to have mistakes made or worse is a problem.  It serves as a lesson to all:  please enter your stories on the Soldier's Stories section of your site.  I am sure that Bob Barrett will help you with any computer submission questions.  Many of you might not type, but someone in your family does.  Dad and I will just talk, and I type on the computer while we talk.  He helps me edit on the spot, and then it's done.  He also talked to a kid in our area who was taking veterans' histories as an Eagle Scout project.  It's on file in his local public library now.  He always says that he didn't do much compared to so many others, but every story is important.

Please, gentlemen - tell your stories now.
