Hi Ben,
Thanks so much - has been so frustrating trying to get through
regarding the address change. Do you know if a new roster has been printed
since May 2004? That is the last one I have received.
This is Martha Berg, Ben, I am well, but Oscar has many health
issues which the doctors are trying to conquer - I.e. diabetes, heart failure,
etc. He presently is in the midst of many tests - has a heart monitor on
at the present, which I shall return to his cardiologist this afternoon.
He is also scheduled for a nuclear Heart Stress Test and an MRI next
week. He had the nuclear resting heart test on Monday. We try to
keep our "chins up" through it all and marvel at the fact that we both are in
our 80's.
We absolutely love the "Mail Call" and look forward to it every
day.
We don't know a good many of the people who write in, but
nevertheless every bit is interesting and keeps us both closer to the
517th. Doubt very much that we can attend the Savannah Reunion, but hope
you will have a great deal to report after August.
Again, thanks so much for keeping us all informed and a "band of
brothers (and sisters)".
Love, Martha Berg

Thanks Ben,
That was John Randall from the 596th you had listed. When I
had a few little pieces of shrapnel in the back of my knee he took them out and
fixed me up like new. They didn't hurt at the time (only little slivers) but I
ended up in the hospital for almost a month sometime later. John was a good guy.
He did come to one of the reunions and I believe it was in Beuna Vista, Fl. in
1981.

Up jump the Devil. I had an interview yesterday with the
hospital
staff in order to tell me what to expect during my surgery and
they
inquired about my health history. I mentioned to them I had had
a
Aortic Dissection 3-4 years ago that was taken care of with
medication,
instead of surgery and they did another x-ray of my chest
area
yesterday.
Today I get a call from the urology dept.
that all
surgeries have been cancelled, No reason given except they did
not know
about my aortic dissection problem, so they said. ( poor excuse is
better
than none) and I have an appt. tomorrow for a stress test at 7:30
,
A.M. so who knows until a Dr. tells me if something has been found.
I
kind of suspect it has. Tom (Art ) McAvoy
FAYETTEVILLE, NC. The Airborne & Special Operations Museum (ASOM)
Foundation officially transferred ownership of the museum building to the Army
on January 20, 2005, marking the occasion with a ceremony featuring LTG John R.
Vines, Commanding General of XVIII Airborne Corps and Ft. Bragg, Marshall B.
Pitts, Jr., Mayor, City of Fayetteville, GEN (Ret.) James J. Lindsay, outgoing
President and now Chairman of the Board of the ASOM Foundation Board of
Directors. LTG Philip R. Kensinger, Jr., Commanding General of Special
Operations Command was in attendance. Army ownership of the building has been
the goal since the idea of the museum was first conceived twenty years
ago.
The general public and museum visitors will notice no difference in
the museum or the way it operates. However, the change is vitally important to
the continued existence of the museum. The ASOM is now officially a part of the
Army Museum System, which will budget Army expenditures for the museum’s
maintenance, utilities, Army staff and other operating costs of the museum.
The ASOM Foundation will continue to operate as it has – a partner to
the Army operating in support of the museum. It will continue to assist in
funding new exhibits, programs and improvements, and in the museum’s continuing
operation as a world-class museum. Foundation gift shop and ticket sales, along
with donations, grants and other fundraising activities, will always be
essential to the future of the museum.
