Ben, What a great job Bob, Mildred,
Jesse, and Lou did at our reunion.
It was great. I gained four pounds.
In answer to another's question, the
party snack food was made by my wife,
June. She makes a large batch
every Christmas for our kids. I was glad she
took a large carton to Fla
to get it away from here. Once I start, I can't
stop.
It was good to meet your son, Jeff and his friend.
Looking forward
to Savannah in August.
Jim Royer, Hq. 3rd.

In Mail Call 840, had
pertinent words to say about the Battle of the Bulge. I have thought about that
time a bit too much recently, but we just can't forget. As we all may know the
2nd Bn helped liberate St Vith on Jan 27 1945. That was a memorable day and a
pleasant one since we were able to exit the snow bound battle ground. Wish that
I could have been at the Florida reunion so that I could have told some of the
folks how a few other boys and I won the busy battle. I'll wait for the Savanna
reunion and tell those who don't know the facts just how we did it. I am looking
forward to that gathering, and urge E. CO, "boys" to show up. Some of them
helped. Though I have not written for several weeks I have enjoyed Mail Call and
thank Bob for his work while Ben was taking a break. In fact it is
impossible to know just how much Bob contributes in all aspects of our web site
and all else. Thanks once again to Ben and Bob.

Dear Ben,
My previous note to Mail
Call solicited no response. Perhaps it will
help if I repeat the
message and supply more information.
The main point is that I am trying
to locate veterans of the 517th who
served in southern France during World
War II in order to put them in
touch with a museum that is trying to collect
information and
memorabilia on units that served in the area. My
involvement is purely
accidental -- my wife is French, and over Christmas
while visiting her
father, who flew Lancasters for the Free French during
the war, he took
us to the museum, where over cups of coffee the curator,
Alfred
Degioanni, told us of that the 517th was one of just two American
units
whose veterans he had been unable so far to contact. I
volunteered to
help. The full address of Mr. Degioanni and museum is
as follows:

5, rue Kinet
13300 Salon de Provence,
France

It is possible that older veterans may not be
e-mail users, in which
case I would very much appreciate help in
communicating my message by
other means.

Ben,
There must be two museums with
similar names. I'm talking about the
one in Salon, which is located
about 40 miles NW of Marseilles. Le Muy
is located near Nice, about
two hours by freeway east of Salon. The
one in Salon is still under
construction, with Alfred Degioanni as
director. If I'm not mistaken,
the 517th landed near Le Muy and then
moved west toward Marseilles. I
don't know how close the unit came to
Salon, but I guess close enough that
Degioanni wants to include it in
his
displays.
Cheers,
Bill

Dear Ben,
About a year or so ago my father, Bud Curtis asked for the songs you
paratroopers sang while marching and running. At that time you posted them on mail
call. I made copies for him, but he
has misplaced them (something I can fully identify with, I can’t seem to find
anything anymore). Anyway, I know
they are somewhere in the archives but I do not know which mail call number it
would be. Do you know? Or could you put the songs again back on
Mail Call. My Dad and I thank
you.
Lory Curtis,
son of Bud Curtis, HQ, 1st Bn.
It was in Mail Call No.
