Hello,

60  years ago today was the last day in combat for the 517. The RCT had 1,500 casualties. 1,400 were in the 517th Regiment -- 70% of its original authorized strength.
The mail below from Clark Archer to Tom Cross gives Illustrates as to the roughness of the Battle of The Bulge.

I will send out another Mail Call later today with mail about the passing of Gail Walsh Tayler.

Hello Ben, thanks for the e-mails. I am too young to have served with such a great Airborne outfit like the 517th, but just the same, I am connected in the 3 following ways: 1. My father-in-law, Bert Duran, was in A Company 2. My old CO in Special Forces was Colonel Gene Frice 3. I am the founding president of the Frank J. Dallas Special Forces Chapter #78. We proudly named our chapter after one of the  517ths living legands. In closing, I would like to ask a big favor of you-I would very much appreciate a telephone number or e-mail or home address for my dear friend Gene Frice. I feel terrible about not being able to communicate my condolences on Margaret's passing. "Airborne All The Way"

About Jack Dunaway,   Everyone except Jack that wears a Hair-piece goes
to great pain to make sure it is on just right and looks well matching
surrounding hair??  Our Friend Jack (and this is no foolin' ) Jack tosses
his hair piece up in the air and however it lands on his head is how he
wears it. ,,Old long time friend  Tom McAvoy

Ben,
An e-mail was received yesterday addressed to President Hensleigh, Ludlow Gibbins,  and myself. In that several of our members would be responsible for an executive  decision, I thought it would best be resolved by generic e-mail with forwarding copies to Howard and Ludlow.

The question submitted by Merle related to 517th invitations to our August 2005, Charleston gathering. The unit has traditionally invited several honored guests to attend and we have paid (or assisted) in their travel expense.

I know no member would question our “inviting” individuals to any or all of our functions, however a question may again arise in view of the use of our funds to do so.

In respect to the above, I like to keep in mind that those individuals have been our true friends and have helped remind their countrymen (who may not share their sentiments) of America’s continuing contribution to their freedom. In my two visits to Europe last year, as well as frequent visits in past years, they were always there to meet me. They have coordinated the annual celebrations, with the public and local officials, which would likely not have occurred without their efforts.

In the event we are to invite or support the travel of honored guests, I would submit the following:

1.   The Mayor, Hubert Zekri, LeMuy), or his most helpful executive assistant Hubert Luporini, who is also an enthusiastic 517 supporter.

2.   Arnold and Irma Targnion (Trois Ponts) of the CADUSA organization.

3.   Our two French friends (Michael Soldi,  and his partner, (Curators of the LeMuy Museum). In this case it is likely they would have to be accompanied by their wives (they are an active part of our support group).

I am sorry to have missed the Florida meeting. I certainly had the best intentions to be in attendance; however events occurred that I could not escape. I will be attending Palm Springs; and certainly Charleston, in August.

Dear Ben: Thanks to you and Bob for keeping things going.

To Robby Scruggs: Those Eagles kept going and going and now they are gone. Some of us were for those NE Patriots. Both teams will be around for another season. Better luck next time.

To Lud Gibbons: If you see Jack Dunaway again in another saloon, give that old S-2 shyster my best regards. His hair didn’t show up on my screen, nor did any of the rest of him. I’ll take your word for the fact that he is still with us–the good die young and none of us have made it–yet. Howard H.

I sent Howard the pictures again. Did anyone else have this problem? - Ben
