Hello,
Walter Graham
Ben,
I was intrigued to read Howard's reference to the
book about Major General Rose. I was at the 3rd Armored Division reunion
in Valley Forge a few years ago when Steven Ossad interviewed my father-in-law
for the book. It seems by a great twist of fate that I married the
daughter of General Rose's assistant G-2, Major Haynes W. Dugan. At 92
years young, Dad Dugan can still pretty much quote by hour and day the position
of the command post, the condition of the units, and the other pertinent
information that G-2's were responsible for. Consequently he is quoted
often in the book. He doesn't agree with my assessment that my Dad, Walter
J. Graham, HQ 1st Battalion was instrumental in saving the entire 3rd AD, but
will admit that the outfit was essential to the outcome of the battle.
Ossad and Marsh did a great job in researching their book, I enjoyed it
a lot, but the real joy is in knowing that a boy from northeastern Pa married a
girl from Shreveport, LA and for a short time many years ago our fathers were
united in an awesome struggle under harsh conditions that changed the
world.
I am the grateful son of a Battling Buzzard.

Ben,
To put my two cents in on the subject:
my
considered opinion is that the money would be better
served if it
helped some of the troopers that can't
make a reunion because of financial
difficulties.
I realize that a big percentage of the ones who
favor
the French, etc., are fairly well off. but from the
view point of a
working stiff and from June Huffman's
letter, that's where I stand, for what
its worth...
Mark Baird
p.s. and I'm not asking for myself, my
problem is
that I don't travel well anymore... something on
the
order of the G.I.s.... ????

Hi Ben
Scott Atkinson, who's uncle Erwin Scott was in the 517th, has
edited my
story of the 517th. I attach a copy of it if you wish to put it up
on
the website. It's a bit lengthy, but then the war was, too!
Hope
all is well, and I hope JG Ward and I see you this
August.
Best
