Mr. Egner,

I apologize for not responding to you in a more timely manner.  My grandpa is still living in California, although my mom is the only one of us who he sees since my grandma passed away.  So to answer your question he has not joined my grandma in heaven.   From what my mom says he is staying active and goes to the bowling alley just about every day.  I thank you for your kind words and appreciate you taking the time to share your memories with me, it means a lot.  I would like to pass them on along with the stories I remember him sharing with me, to my children.  Thanks you for your service and sacrifice, I along with a great many people am very thankful and appreciative.  I'll pass along via my mom your message and that you said hello.  I'll also try and get him to the next reunion, but won't be able to make any promises.  Thanks again.

Trenton Yenokida

Ben    Received a call from Maxine Smothers today informing me she missed the last reunion since she moved.  Happy she can make it this year.  Jack Smothers, Carl Keifer and Alex Sierra were the guys that started this reunion many years ago and deserve all the credit.  Sign ups are coming quickly and it helps since I have to inform the hotel in order to arrange for the food service.  Thanks for your help            Bill

Dear Fellow Troopers: When considering the friends of ours in Europe we
might decide to help financially , I suggest that we limit our efforts
to  the older friends with which most of us our familiar ,viz: Maria
Gaspar: Arnold and Irma Targnion: The Le Muy Museum conservators, Eric
and ? and their wives: an Aime Leocard . Just a suggestion and something
to think about before decision is finalized. Respectfully Bob Dalrymple

60th Anniversary Commemoration in Manhay, June 2 2004

Dear Friends of the 517th,

On June 2nd, 2004, we had in Manhay, the big happiness to receive a group of 300 - 350 people from America, all of them are from Paratroopers units or from their family (The Static Line Group). About 75 veterans of WWII were present with three men of the 517th. (Ludlow Gibbons, Daniel F. Smith and Gene M. Frice).    For this visit in Manhay, we have the project to start the celebrations of the 60th Anniversary and we does a ceremony across the town with a small exposition etc…  So' one think was missing in Manhay.   Now, it's rectify and I have the big pleasure to inform that a votive tablet was inaugurated, in homage to the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment that liberated the village during the night of December 26th, 27th, 1944.  This monument was a big surprise for the men of the 517th present in the group and particularly Mr. Ludlow Gibbons that was in Manhay on December 1944.

We will have again some celebrations in Manhay during this 60th Anniversary, and particularly on December 18th.  You are all the welcome !

I'm including some photos of this ceremony.

Good Bless all men of the 517th !

Sincerely,

A friend from Manhay,

Eddy

P.S. : You can see some other photos of the ceremony on the website of the municipality of Manhay.  http://www.manhay.org/

We all read your e-mails and forward them to Elbert who does not have a computer. Just recently thanks to you we were able to put him in contact with the family of Harold C. Daniels who is buried at Henri-Chapelle. He has been looking for them for 60 years. Surprisingly he has a sister that lives maybe 15 miles from his home. It was like a dream come true to talk to them for Harold was his best friend and died next to him. Thank you for your dedication to this web site, hope to see you in Palm Springs.  Ruben Duran
