Gen Seitz;
I hope you're doing well. Tallahassee is treating me
good, and would be
great if I could just get the Florida legislature to go
home and stay there
for awhile.
Saw an obituary today in our local
paper, the Tallahassee Democrat, for a
Circuit Judge Victor Cawthon. A man
of long-standing fine repute in our
community. Decided to read it. Was
surprised to learn he served in the
517th. Went to the website and learned
from the December '44 roster that he
served then as a Sgt. in Headquarters
Company of 2nd Battalion. I've
attached the obituary
below.
Victor M. Cawthon, 86, a Circuit Court Judge, died Saturday,
April 30, 2005.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Denise Chevet
Cawthon.
The service will be at 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday at St. Johns
Episcopal Church
Cemetery. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Chapel
(850-877-8191) is
handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made
to Big Bend
Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308, Habitat
for
Humanity, 121 Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709, or Parkinson Foundation,
1501
NW 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136.
He was born August
23, 1918, in Gainesville to William S. Cawthon and Anne
Wildon Cawthon. He
was educated in Leon County schools before attending
University of Florida,
where he received an Artium Baccalaureatus. He then
studied at University of
Miami, receiving his Bachelor of Laws in 1943, and
at Florida State
University, where he received an AGTG. He was a C.P.A. and
a
C.L.U.
Judge Cawthon's service in the U.S. military in the 517th
Parachute Infantry
from 1943 until 1947, earned him a Silver Star and a
Purple Heart.

Bonjour, cher M. Zekri,
I hope that all is well with you and the good people of
your beautiful town. We enjoyed very much our visit there last summer, and
we still talk about it all the time. After our trip
there, I sent you some photos which I hope you received.
We are trying to contact Jean Michel and Eric Renoux at
the musee but we are unsuccessful. Perhaps you could assist us. The
men of the 517 are would like to invite them to the August reunion in the United
States.
amis.
Warmly,
Claire Giblin
