Hi Ben,
I see that Merle is soliciting funds for our foreign visitors. He put his
street address in the newsletter but I am sure he won't mind if I put in his
whole address in case someone doesn't feel like looking it up. So since he is
designating me as "arm twister", I will put it in for him.
Please send a contribution to help with our visitors from Europe. Our Museum
couples are finding the air fares a problem for them. If we can help on this
end they may be able to attend.
Address: Merle W. McMorrow  1209 Prospect Place, Bismarck, ND 58501
Thanks, Leo Turco

I handed our friends from France $100.00 at the Columbus reunion toward
there expense for that trip.  and took them out for dinner twice and
breakfast. once. I  wrote to them in early spring last year regards to a
return trip to France last summer,  I received such a cold shoulder I
couldn't believe it??? So I  had to make plans without them??? To top it
off I had an emergency  (arotic disection) hit me  in Vegas of all places
and had to cancel everything for 6 months. They had been extremely
helpful  before when I went to France, Would not accept any gratuity , So
I just donot understand this reaction  last year??? Tom McAvoy

Hi Ben and Leo   Leos comment on the 596 room is well taken but this has
been a tradition since the Minneapolis  re union and was Charley Pughs pet .
He was the first to register at this reunion and had made all the
arrangements . Lyle Madison was just here Monday and Tuesday and we called
the hotel and had Charleys reservations switched to us .  We will surely
rotate and not spend all of our time there and welcome all team members to
drop in. If it makes you feel any better  , my wife has made the same comment
that you did Leo.

Ben,

Thank you for responding to my inquiry concerning your mail call.  I learned
about your mail call and the 517th web site from Gene Brissey.  He was my
father's squad leader and has been very kind to me over the years.  We have
accompanied the Brissey's to Europe on two very remarkable trips.  We went
with them to Belgium in 1994.  We all went again in 1999.  That year we
started the trip in southern France.  These trips were monumental events in
my life.  My father has been deceased since 1982.  He was in Company E of the
third platoon.  He had been to a few reunions in the 1960's and '
70's. He felt good about his affiliation with the 517th. He only talked with
me about his war experiences on one occasion.  That was for about a half an
hour the night before I left on a two month backpacking trip to Europe in
1972.  He did not like to talk about his war experiences.  I guess he was
probably trying to forget the worst of these experiences.  Anyway, I was able
to locate some of the places where he was during the war on that trip in 1972
and then again on another trip in 1973.  When we traveled with the Brissey's,
we went to most of the sites.  We met the young couples who are starting the
museum in southern France.  We also were hosted by Irma and Arnold Targnion
and Maria Gaspar in Belgium.  I have characterized these people as "Giants of
the Earth."  We also had a remarkable reunion with a family by the name of
Salmon in Belgium.  This reunion was written up in a local Belgian newspaper
and was also televised by a local Belgian television station.  A few years
ago I also communicated with Lee Lacey, a nephew of C.B. Jones, who was
killed in action at Mont de Fosse near Trois Ponts in Belgium.  Lee and his
family documented C.B.'s story in a family book called "The Story of a
Paratrooper."  He sent me a copy.  C.B. was a friend of Gene Brissey and my
father. I have not communicated with Lee for about 10 years.  I have most of
the books about the 517th and have been affiliated with the organization as a
son of a member for many years.  We have never attended a reunion, but are
planning on attending the reunion in Bismarck for a few days.  Thanks again
for responding.

I can mail a check!!!!
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Bismarck next month.

We are trying to locate our brother Jesse O. Goswick who was killed in action
on August 22, 1944 but were unable to find his name on the list of people
killed in action in WWII.  Please e mail us if you have any information
concerning the whereabouts of his name on the list of killed in action. The
year may be 1943

MBHWBG1   William B. Goswick  brother  Thank you for any help you may give us

If the year was 1943 we were still in the States.  We didn't go overseas
until May 1944.

I have forwarded your letter to Ben Barrett who will get it on our website
where many will see it.  With greater exposure, someone may contact you with
information you are seeking

                                                    Merle W. Mc Morrow

I can't find any record on the World War 2 Casualties Honor Roll However, like
many records it could be incomplete.

I think someone asked you how many had registered (Doty I think)  As of today
it is 160 but now as the time draws near new registrations are coming in each
day's mail.

The Thunderbolt was finished today and should be printed within a few days.
It is only 12 pages because I am running out of time and energy.

                                                        Merle
Running out of energy? How come?
Every member of the 517th should be forever grateful that we were so
fortunate to have Merle at the helm during this most critical time in the
Association's history. No one could have done more than he has to keep the
Association alive and active.
Ben
