Note to Neal McAfee regarding Cleo Browning
Your great uncle Cleo Nelson Browning was killed in action in Manhay, Belgium during the last few days of December, 1944. He should be listed by all authorities as KIA. There is no presumption about it. If the State of Wyoming made the mistake of listing him as POD, it should correct its error. There are many of us who remember the unfortunate bombing of Manhay by that Air Corps plane after we took Manhay from the SS. Thanks to Ben’s Mail Call we now know more of the details of your great uncle’s death than we ever could have gathered without it. We are still in touch with eye witnesses to the bombing and your uncle’s evacuation, including Fred Beyer, Cleo’s good friend and fox hole mate, who lost an arm as a result of the bomb and was evacuated with him.
There are some facts you might supply if you have not done this already. Do you or some family members know where Cleo is buried? Men killed in combat were buried in European cemeteries. Our men killed at Manhay were buried in Belgium. Their families were given the opportunity to visit those cemeteries at government expense, or alternatively they could have the body returned for reburial in the States. There are occasions where a direct hit could disintegrate the soldier’s body, but from what we know, we are quite certain that is not the case here.
If we in the Association can do anything to get Cleo’s POD designation changed to KIA, we will be glad to do it. Please let us know what to do. Howard Hensleigh

Hello Ben, this is very interesting. John Dickson was wounded about the same time as Dick Baysinger, B Co, and they may have been together at some point shortly after that. Dick ended up near Paris after several places along the road.

I see that John has 6 Hershey Bars, indicating that he probably was with another unit prior to the Nov 44 assignment to 517. That is the same time Dick joined the 517.

Do you have an email or postal address so Dick can get in contact?
Thanks, Don

Ben

sure sorry that I cannot make the reunion, It would be nice to meet you and all the other members and there families, maybe another time.

I have often thought about the ship that sailed back and forth sending shells over our heads that sounded like bath tubs going thru the air, was it a battle ship, if so what was it's name. I haven't ever seen anything on your mail about this.

Ben - The video came through five by five. I had the chance to make an assisted freefall (not a tandem jump) for my 50th birthday last year. Seeing the video made me want to step out the doorway again. Thanks for providing the inspiration. mark landreth
