Hello,
Belated Happy Easter to all. Just got back from an overnight trip. Many
interesting developments while I was away from computer.
First of all because of the overwhelming support of online members, our
French friends will be able to come to Bismarck.
This goes to show what we can do for the 517th with the Internet. We received
notice of their problem and within minuets members were notified and within a
few hours we knew what the results would be. Impossible without the Internet.
We were also able to get information about Jesse Goswick which his brother
was seeking.  We have placed on the website an Honor Roll for 517th members
who were KIA. The list is probably incomplete. Please let us know KIA's that
are not on the list.
Better get this out now before I start making mistakes.
Ben,

Best wishes to all for a lovely holiday.

Goswick name rings a bell with me, he may have been in "G" Co. If it is who
I'm thinking of he was killed at Col de Braus right after we captured the
place. As I recall, he was killed by either mortar or artillery fire. Possibly
Top kick Dallas Long of "G" Co.
would remember for sure. I picture a pretty good sized, blond lad.

Robert;
Yes, I knew your father, in fact I was his Squad Leader.  When I transferred
from the regular infantry to the Paratroopers in Aug. of 1943 your father was
in H Co, of the 517 th.  I was a 60 MM Mortar Squad Leader,  a squad consists
of a gunner, asst  gunner and 3 ammunition carriers.  Your father was # 1
ammo carrier and I also used him as a gunner.

He was a real trooper, a very good soldier,, never giving me any trouble,
well maybe once in a while.   I was fortunate to have him in my squad.

When we jumped into Southern France, on Aug. 15 1944, we missed our  Drop
Zone  by 35 miles, landing about 50 miles behind the German Lines.  Half of
our squad landed on  one side of a mountain and 3 of us on the other side, It
took  3 days before we got together.

Our Squad lost only one man, KIA in The Battle of the Bulge, He was a
replacement.  The Squad stayed together through the battle of Manhay,
Belgium, Dec. 27 1944.  I don't remember much of Jan. and Feb. of 1945, out
of a Company of 180 troopers only 18 of us walked out. I believe your father
was one  of them.

I may have some pictures of your dad.  I'm new at this Computer stuff, so may
have to mail them to you.    I'll need your mailing address.

I would like to have a copy of the letter stating  that he was awarded the
Bronze Star, for my records.  He was also awarded The American Campaign
Ribbon,  European Theater Ribbon with 5 battle Stars, The Good Conduct  Medal
and WW II Victory  Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Dad,

I put together all the records I could find on KIA's from Clark Archer's
files, and posted them on the web site.  It is probably not complete, but it
does add up to 253 records, which is a little more than I expected.
(Somewhere in one of the histories, it mentioned that 244 were killed, so
this list may be fairly complete.)

I put it into alphabetic order, and included the specific unit, cemetary, and
location killed, wherever the info was available.
Bob
PS:  I can't imagine how Clark compiled all this info, let alone retyped
everything into his lists.  He must have had lots of typing help.

We were able to find Jesse O. Goswick on this list and Bob has placed the
list on our website.

Hi Ben:
Glad we got young Johns address straight. When you talk about problems with
addresses and typing you're talking about me. I've put addresses in the
address book and still screw up one way or another. I am learning a little
every week or so, a few more months and this mean machine may be under some
control. When I signed in on the guest book I didn't even know about spell
check and made a few errors in spelling, such as misspelling "father." But,
what the heck we told not to be concerned about spelling, etc.
Thanks for mentioning AARP and the discount. Believe it or not I stumbled
on that early on and got my AOL discount. I too wish that every one of our
people were on AOL because some of those addresses a weird. No matter, you
manage to do a great job with the Mail Call and your notes or whatever. Your
efforts have truly brought the PRCT much closer. Lets keep looking for more
members, and I mean those of us out here on the receiving end of your
efforts.

Best Regards,
Gene
