Hi Ben,
I want to send a message to Dorothy Lubic on the condition of Andrew. We
are sorry to hear that after such a long struggle with his health that he is
finally under the wonderful care of his family and Hospice. As you know I just
went through this with the death of my husband, Leo on Mary 10th. He was
supposed to be sent home the next day under the care of Hospice. They brought a
bed into our home the day he passed on and picked it up the next day. If he had
been in a little better condition I would have loved to have him home with his
beloved kitties. They took turns sitting on his lap the days before he went into
the hospital. I just hope Andrew will pass as peacefully as Leo did. I was
sitting with him waiting for one of our daughters who had gone home to meet the
Hospice people when I looked at him and he just quietly left us. We could only
wish the same for any love one who did suffer a lot in the days and weeks
before.
My thoughts will be with you and your family. I am fortunate to have a
loving family to stand by me.

Sorry to hear about Andrew... I have not had any contact
with you since you left Goldsboro. I guess that I have known him longer than
anyone else in the 517th. You could say we started out together. He
was in my platoon in "H" Company when I was a shave tailed second
Lieutenant and he was a member of the platoon. Tell him I am praying for
him

A story I have told many times about Andy, which he probably does
not remember himself. It was back in 43 when we were jumping C47 on
those short tobacco fields around Camp McCall. We would hook up a stick on
the line and usually had 2 men back in the radio compartment who had to hookup on
the run, It was almost impossible to get the whole stick on
the field. Usually some of front or rear on the stick ended up in the
those tall pine trees. It was also before we had the quick release
type chutes, We had those snap fastener type chutes and the policy at
that time was make them a tight as possible. I lead the stick out and
ended up in one of those tall pines. I followed my training, crossed my
feet as I went in, the pulled my reserve to clime down. I don't know how
many of you tried to get out those snap faster while hang in a tree. It was
a real struggle. Anyway, I made it, but as I slid out of my harness, my
canteen hung up in the webbing and I ended up hanging in the tree by my
canteen. Andy was on the ground laughing. I said, "Lubic climb up the
tree and cut me loose." He just sat there and laughed. Finally I said
, "something like get up here or I'll kick your ass when I get loose."
Story ends, but he must of gotten me loose. Cause I'm not
there now.
