Ben, I was looking at the 517 page 4/16/01, and still noted that my fathers
name is still misspelled under the medals, I think it was for the bronze
star. 1st lt. Walter Irvin (Irwin). I would like to say that I like your web
page, and that there are not enough words to describe the feelings of
admiration for the men that served and fought with the 517th, I have talked
with Gen. Seitz on several occasions about my dad, and he told me that
he (W.G. Irwin) was with him from Camp Toccoa Ga. until the end of the war, I
wish that more of the vet's would provide stories, and events to your web
page to help future generations understand what sacrifices were made by
these brave men, they exemplify what the words Honor and Courage truly mean.
Again thank you for the web page, and the info.
Mike Irwin

Hello Mike,
Thanks for your kind comments. Will correct the spelling of your fathers'
name.
I have a service called "Mail Call" in which I send out a news letter two or
three times a week. It is just news about the 517th Association and mail from
members and friends. We have many sons, daughters, grandsons etc on our
mailing list. If interested I can add your address to our roster. It may be
boring to non members. I'll send you a couple back issues and you can let me
know if you want to receive it on a regular basis.
Brest Regards,
Ben

Hey Ben I personally carried this man(medic) down the mountainside in
Italy along with Jimmy Degnan. The medic had a terrible  thigh wound , I
ran 6 miles to an aid station to get a ambulance , Another medic drove
the ambulance back to the foot of the mountain, I got two stretchers out
of the back and carried them up the mountain to where Jim Degnan and the
medic were. The terrain was so rough it took 4 men (one on each corner of
the stretcher to carry these men off the mountain)   We put them in the
ambulance and I rode with them back to the hospital; The Medic died on
the way to the hospital,  We carried Degnan in and came out to get the
medic , someone had already robbed the medic within the few minutes it
took to carry Degnan in. One of our current reunion official, A guy name
Knoph  or Knopp was a medic and knew this medic. I was told the medics
name was Simpson. first name unknown by me.  He should be on a roster
somewhere??? J.Degnan was shot in both knees.   Simpson is not listed on
our honor roll??

If anyone knows the first name of Simpson, let us know so that we can add him
to the Honor Roll. Hope to meet Jim Degnan in Bismarck and maybe he can give
me that information.
Ben

Ben
The Mail Calls are coming in A-Okay. Thanks to your
efficiency and dedication. Since my son in law has
placed me on AOL as a gift and I have been playing
around and getting acquainted. I like what AOL
provides. However, I will tinker for a while before I
make the final decision. Again, thanks and God bless
you. All is well on this end.

Comments: My Dad, Bruce Darrow, Class of '45, was a proud member of the
517th. I regret to say that he passed away in August of 1994 from Leukemia.
He is interred at the Veteran's Cemetery outside Phoenix, AZ. I am looking
for a patch, from that period for his flag case. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks! Lee Darrow mstrhypno@earthlink.net
