Registration due before July 10, 2005!
As we get closer to the reunion in Savannah, we should have a clear idea of the Auxiliary amendment to the bylaws. We will vote on it at the business meeting. If it passes, the president, with the Board’s approval, will recommend approval of the Auxiliary and the membership will vote to establish it. We need to understand clearly who may become Auxiliary members and what we expect the Auxiliary to do. Accordingly, the amendment is explicit and a little longer than it would take to cover the bare essentials. Although you kindly published it once before, please help us to have the concept clearly in mind at Savannah by sending it out in Mail Call at this time. Here is the text:
"Section 4. The President may recommend, with the approval of the Board of Directors, the establishment of an auxiliary organization of the Association (the "Auxiliary"). Membership in the Auxiliary shall be limited to wives, widows, descendants, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews of men who served honorably with the Combat Team. Honorary Members also shall be eligible for Auxiliary membership. The purpose of the Auxiliary is assist the Members in achieving the Goals of the Association set forth in Article I, Section 2 of these Bylaws. The Auxiliary shall establish its own board of directors and officers who shall work in concert with the Officers and Board of Directors of the Association in the achievement of those Goals. The Auxiliary and the Association shall make plans for continuing to preserve the memory of those who served in the Combat Team beyond the lives of the Active Membership, including for example, continuation of Mail Call and the Website referred to in Article X, Section 3, and publications such as the Thunderbolt."
Once the Auxiliary is established, the men at the mens' luncheon who are not Combat Team members will join the ladies at the ladies luncheon room to elect officers and the board of directors for the newly established Auxiliary. Sometime before we leave Savannah it would be a good idea if the two sets of officers and boards of directors would get together to see how best the Auxiliary can assist the Officers and Directors of the Association in achieving our goals.
I am sue we can pull it off.
Respectfully, Howard Hensleigh

HELLO BEN
THANKS FOR THE INQUIRY AND IT IS GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU. REGRETTABLY THE ANSWER IS NO. I HAVE BEEN FEELING ABSOLUTELY ROTTEN THE PAST THREE WEEKS. DON'T KNOW WHY. I'VE HAD A LOT OF TESTS AND AM GOING IN TOMORROW A.M. FOR SOME MORE. I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO SHAKE IT OFF. I CERTAINLY HOPE THINGS ARE GOING WELL WITHIN THE BARRETT FAMILY AND I WANT YOU TO HAVE A GREAT REUNION IN SAVANNAH.
YOUR FRIEND, TOM
Helen Beddow
HI Ben,
I have the Registrations from the Silas Brown family,
which includes Donna, but have not heard from any of the rest of the
"youngsters". We just keep plugging away. If I have enough energy
yet this evening, I will count how many we have coming to include spouses,
children and friends. If I have enough energy..........I have on the
computer since 8:00 this morning. Maybe a glass of wine is in
order.
Helen

I tracked you down from the photo of the GREELEY on the
web. Knowing that you were once assigned to the ARNOLD, I though you might
like to read an eye witness account to the loss. With-in the following
link, written by a radio operator aboard the BAIRD, is his account.

I
hope, someday to locate the proceedings of the Board that decided that Chasteen
should not have "Master's Papers". There has to be more details. Of the
few casualties aboard Army Mine Planters, the majority were civilian
crews.

.************A blast from the past. I did serve aboard the Arnold and the Greeley before joining the Airborne and was on the Arnold the day but prior to it's fatal rescue attempt.
