Thank you so much for asking, Ben.  I would love to do that, but I just started a new job two weeks ago and on top of that, my mother is now very ill and I have been commuting from Harrisburg to New Jersey to take help take care of her.
It would be an honor to meet you.  Are you still living in MA?  PA is not that far away.  Maybe some time after the reunion we could hook up?  In fact, I have in-laws in Rhode Island and will be in Providence in September for a wedding.

Dear Ben:

It has come to my attention that you may need the services of a defense counsel to defend against an old AWOL charge. By this message I am offering my services at my usual hourly rate to harassed members of the 517th Combat Team. That rate is the same as it was back in 1943, namely zero.

Here are the elements of our defense:

1. The statute of limitations ran more than fifty years ago.

2. You really weren’t AWOL. You showed up after the pass period on time for roll call and never missed a minute of duty time. The guy who signed your pass is the guilty party, namely 1st Lt. James G. Bennet, alias "Burp Gun Benny", so named for what he illegally smuggled into the States in his bed roll. Although we have searched for for him for many years he flew the coup and has been AWOL for longer than any of us can remember. Since you could not find him to give him the business end of the pass, your failure to do so is fully exonerated.

3. The charge against you was brought by "Black Tom", the correct Army nomenclature being, Major Thomas R. Cross. He wore two hats. One was president of the 517th Courts Martial. In this role he was a fair, wise and judicious member of the Court. The other hat was as Dick Seitz bad guy for which he was given the name "Black Tom". They played the good cop bad cop roles in the 2nd Bn. and Dick was obviously the good cop.

4. Terry Sanford, the Trial Judge Advocate, is no longer with us and can no longer prosecute the case. If Terry were here he would recommend that charges be dropped.

5. In the face of this defense, if Black Tom persists in going to trial, I am sure that Major Thomas R. Cross, as president of the Court, will toss the case out.

6. If all else fails, we will play our trump card. You can’t run Mail Call and the Website from the stockade. Without those two linchpins, the entire 517th organization will fall apart including the Court and the stockade and you will walk out a free men.

Hang in there against all adversity,

2nd Lt. Howard E. Hensleigh,

Defense Counsel

Thanks for your E-mail Ben; I'm sorry, but I will not be able to make the

Mr. Barrett, I have written before and got some advice from you all on how to replace my Dads medals (which were stolen). I was even sent a 517th patch from you all a few years ago. My dad was Pvt. William M. Branch, 517th Co.B. He was wounded on June 18th, 1944 at Grosetto. Recently I was looking at all the photos and saw some photos sent in by Lisa Ferraiolo. She had several photos with my father in them. Is there anyway I could arrange to get copies of some of them? I of course would be more than happy to pay for them or send a check to help defray costs for the upcoming reunion. Actually, I would love to come to the reunion, but that is probably not possible. I do not have any photos of my father from that era. Let me know, Sincerely, Diane Haverin

Ben:  I got married at Fort Bragg in 1945.  Jim Bennett was our "Best
Man" . Tried to get up with him for our 50th anniversary.  Best
information available was that he might be living in Korea.   I came home
to Michigan for a 60th class reunion in 1998.  Met an old classmate, her
husband had also passed on, we were married in October 1998.  She had
never left our small home town.   We agreed to live in Michigan in the
summer and North Carolina in the winter.  To get to the point,  I have
been in Michigan since May.  Will not have any access to my 517th files
or publications until Oct.  "  When was Art Killed"  My recaller is
sometimes , not so good.

I still have some hopes of us getting to Savannah.  WE had 3 good years
She  suffered Kidney failure about 3 years ago and is now on dialysis.
So our traveling is somewhat limited.

Dear Ben,
Thank you so much for getting back so soon.  I would love to receive Mail Call.  I do receive the Thunderbolt, still addressed to my dad.  I need to change the address on that and have it sent to my home.  I went ahead and e-mailed Lisa about the photos and maybe we can work something out without bothering you.  You know, Dad lost his right arm because of his wounds at Grosetto and those photos are the first time I had even seen him with both arms. I go to the web site as often as possible...looking at all the photos....and then Wow, there he was.  Dad died in 1988 from cancer but I have tried to keep his memory alive for the grandchildren.  I sure wish I could get to Savannah and meet you all, but It would be difficult.  My son-in-law will be home visiting for 10days before a deployment to Iraq and I really want to spend some time with him. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for all that you and the 517th family and friends do.  I appreciate you all more than you can imagine.  God bless!
