As you may already know I served as a fellow officer in
the 3rd Bn. with Jim from November 1943 until he was killed at
Bergstein, Germany, in one of our last days in combat. As you also may already
know, we are forming an Auxiliary of the Association at the Savannah reunion. If
there is enough interest, it will carry on even after the men of the Combat Team
thin out. It will be composed of people like you. You definitely belong.
Brothers and sisters are specifically included. You will be eligible to
participate whether you attend the reunion or not, but we would be honored to
have Jim’s representative attend. We know some of Jim’s Company I, such as Frank
Dallas, will be there. Frank is now blind. He wears a hearing aid, and I have
been able to talk with him on the phone easily. You should not miss the
opportunity to see these old troopers who think the world of your brother. Even
while serving under Marty Fastia, Jim held I Co. together. The officers of the
Company insisted that he command it when Marty could not go on.
We look forward to seeing you at Savannah, if you can
make it.
Sincerely, Howard Hensleigh

How I
found the 517th page: From a search engine
Comments: My uncle,
Sergeant Andrew Murphy, was the first killed in Grosetto, Italy on June 18,
1944. Anyone who remembers Andrew ("Andy" or "Bud") and can share any
information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Diane, my father Bill Chaney also served in North Africa with another
outfit before joining the 517. Have never been able to get any info on this. My
dad was in D company though and was with the 517 almost from the time they
arrived in Europe. I wasn't aware that he had been in a different outfit until
talking to Floyd Polk. Can anyone out there help with this.
