Ben - please run this notice every day if you don't
mind. I want to make sure that everyone sees it.
IMPORTANT
INFORMATION---
For those of you that are flying into Savannah for the
Reunion, the shuttle service at Savannah International Airport (Low Country
Adventures/Gray Line) strongly suggests that you call their 800 number and make
reservations to be taken to the DeSoto Hilton. By having reservations, you
can be assured that you will be on the shuttle bus for that particular
flight. Without reservations, you have to wait for the people with
reservations to be seated, and then you will be taken care of with the seats
available.
The 800 number is 1 (800) 845-5582, then follow the options
for Reservations. When calling for reservations, have your Flight
information ready and a credit card to hold your reservations. This
information was not given to me until now, so I hope that you will call for your
reservations ASAP. The shuttle bus desk is in the North Baggage Claim
area.
There is also taxi service
One other
thing............that tropical storm lurking out in the Atlantic will NOT be in
the Savannah area.......I promise.

As you may know, I was in the Air
Force for almost 27 years. For most of my career I flew fighters and I was
a Wild Weasel pilot. Wild Weasels are the guys who seek out and destroy
enemy air defenses such as Surface-To-Air missile systems and radar guided
AAA. I was stationed in Europe for 10 years from 1989
to 1999. I served at Spangdahlem Air Base in the Eiffel,
Frankfurt, and
Mannheim and at
SHAPE which is by Mons Belgium.
Growing up with my father I couldn’t help but become interested in WWII. I
was especially interested in the Battle of the Bulge and the
campaigns in Europe. While I was
stationed there I traveled to many of the battle fields. I even gave
informal tours to anyone who wanted to go. On occasion, some fathers who
had fought around there would come back to try and find places where they had
fought. I would usually be asked to provide some information on locations,
roads, towns, etc. where there unit had been. Most didn’t know where they
were exactly but their memories came back quick when they got around the area
where they had been. My interest was always in the individual GI and how
they often changed the course of battles with single or small group
actions. I also had my squadron support the annual memorial ceremonies at
the American
Cemetery in St Avold
France. It was
interesting to explain to young Airmen in my unit that Americans were actually
buried there. Many of them thought that these cemeteries were only
memorials. Some of those same Airmen have been fighting in the
Middle East now for
years.
I saw on your unit’s website that
you are having a unit reunion in Savannah 15-19
August. Are you going? If so and it’s not a problem, I would like to
take my son Michael over to meet you and spend some time with you. I live
in Warner Robins
Georgia.
Savannah is about 2
hours from here and an easy drive. In any case, if it’s OK with you I will
continue to email you and ask a lot of questions.
Sincerely, Bart

Hi Ben
Will there be any of Eddy Monfort's books at the
reunion?
Rick lived in France for a couple of years (in a
winery) and he has already expressed interest in one of the books.
Thanks,
Nila

Ben'
Arnold and Irma goofed on their plane reservations and they leave for home
about an hour before the banquet on Friday night. She feels so sad about
it; especially when I told her that General Seitz is the banquet speaker.
She showed me a photo album about his recent trip to
Belgium.
They have not received a copy of the Thunderbolt since I quit publishing
it. She got her information on the reunion from the Static Line which
evidently had the wrong dates shown.
See you soon.
