Subject: MAIL CALL NO. 968 517TH PRCT--AUGUST 26, 2005

Hello,

We have in this Mail Call a request from Michelle Sarver, the niece of Andrew Murphy, for information about him. Andrew Murphy was the first 517th member KIA .I have read about how his death had effect on other members. He was well known and a popular member of the 1st Bn.

Please contact any members that might have known Andrew and try to get as much information as possible for Michelle. I know that Ed Jordan and Mel Biddle  were friends , but they are not on the internet.

We would like to get  photos and news about Andrew to have a special page on the website

I believe that Andrew Murphy should have special recognition.

Hey Oscar Kneer,  About time you checked into the 517,  I am Tom McAvoy,
have attended many reunions,  including the 1st one in Chicago Ill. put
on by no less than  John Davis and his friends in 1946  I believe,  John
has passed away  7-8 years ago and Shorty Bauman a year  before that
I saw Norm. Allen  ..in Bismarck No Dakota  at our reunion up there
along with Dick  Demmel,  You should remember Leo P. Dean,  he is still
jumping,  Hulette had about 800 jumps in until he made his last one,
(chute did not open.)   Real great Oscar to hear from you, Maybe we can
get together at the next reunion in Portland??  Al Dearing passed away a
year ago?? Jack Dunaway is still perking along, however he is 90 years
old now and losing his memory,  I called him on the phone and he
claimed he could not remember me????  I have had 5 major operations this
year already and the last one was schudled 8-1st- 05  so I could not make
Savannah reunion.  Frantel is still with us??  But he never comes to a
reunion???      Bill Shortt is still with us  I hear from him about every
6 months he lives in  Corneila, Ga You remember that place? His address
is Box  517 Corneila, Ga.  Surprise him with a letter.

Your old friend

Hi Ben
I would just like to say what a wonderful reunion it was. Savannah is a beautiful city. Helen Beddow and her husband did a wonderful job. And once again the people of the 517 were very nice to me and made be feel welcome. So thank you to everyone.

Ben, please get the word to Darrel Egner and Tom Reber that they forgot the troopers in Nevada.

Hi Ben,

My father is 77 years old.  When his brother Andrew was killed in WW2, my grandmother had a lot of difficulty dealing with his death, so they did not speak about it very often.  In 1972, we were living in Pennsylvania when Hurricane Agnes hit the east coast and all of my uncle Andrew's WW2 items were lost in the flood.  All of his photos, papers, etc... I would love to make a book for my father about Andrew and was wondering how difficult it is to get any information about him from records.  I wondered if you could help me by giving me any information on who to contact.  Dog Jordan or someone else, I hope, may have a picture of him. I went to the War Dept. files and saw a printable certificate of service I could use.  Any ideas??  Thanks!

Michelle

Hi Ben and all,

I hope none of the 517th were in that awful storm in Florida.  Saw pictures on the TV this morning.  I think I'll stick with earthquakes.  Those hurricanes are just too scary.

Again, thanks to all for the wonderful time I (and Rick) had.

Lory Curtis, thanks for reading the numbers and your reply that you found 10 troopers in Utah.  Frankly, I didn't think many would read that report but Ben Barrett needs to keep busy.  (Still don't know how you do it Ben)

To answer your question Utah shows 7 on the roster and thats good right of wrong.  I tried to show only the largest and smallest states in my report.

One thing I didn't mention is a break down on our National Reunions.  We had 13 west of the Miss. and 11 east of the Miss.  Who knows what the next 10 years will bring.  Looking forward to you young people keeping it going.
