Here is some important information relative to donating materials to the USAMHI Army Heritage and Educations Center and some photos of the facility and an example of a display.

Mr. Cross,

I am glad that the 517th is considering us as a home for their materials.  If any of their members have any questions, please have them contact me at their earliest convenience.  As the registrar I am the one who would be their point of contact.

If the 517th would decide to donate their materials, they would contact me so that we could arrange shipping etc.  Once the materials arrived, they would be inventoried and put into our electronic tracking system.  The archival materials would be sent to the archives for proper storage and processing and the museum items would be sent to the museum for proper cataloging and storage.  I would then send out a formal letter of gift and Gift agreement form to the association for signature.  Due to Army regulations, the materials would have to be formally donated to the U.S. Army and the Army Heritage and Educations Center.  As such they would become property of the United States Army.  Once the materials were put into our system they would be inventoried and cataloged so that they are made available to the public for research.

Unfortunately we are not able to maintain the website.  As you know, maintaining a web-site is almost a full time responsibility and we would run into many of the same problems that you are encountering now.  We just do not have the IT staff to be able to accomplish the task.

I am going to try to attach some photographs of the building and the display area.  They are a bit large, so I only sent two quick photographs.  Hopefully they come through.

I hope this answers your questions.  If any other questions arise, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Ben; Great work by Wayne, Tom, and Greg Statler . I regret to say that some of my stuff got thrown out, inadvertently, at our last move into this retirement resort , but I want the 596 material to be a part of the 517th effort. I will start off by sending a plaque Clark made for us and that I presented to The Engineer School at Ft Leonard Wood after our reunion at Nashville. Tom had asked me to take care of that matter, which I did .Visiting Leonard Wood a few years later, I discovered that they would not hang the plaque with other Engr units because our logo was never approved by the War Dept ! I even attempted to take the matter up with the AGO's office on a trip to DC , but could not get and audience with anyone! This, despite the fact that at the entrance to The Engr Museum at L W there is an Engr Paratrooper displayed hanging in his chute ! That would certainly be an appropriate place for our plaque . Of interest, also, is the fact that L W lost the first plaque we presented in'89, and Clark had had two made so I went by there with a second one and personally put in the hands of a lady in charge of such . Shabby treatment  ,indeed, by my own branch of service . If my memory is not too out of whack, I believe we were one of two separate Combat Parachute Engineer Companies . I will "carry on" . Bob Dalrymple ,A/B!

Ben;

I'd like to follow up on what Col. Cross said in Mail Call 981 about it
being time to fish or cut bait.

Most of you are too modest to brag on yourselves and, probably, you don't
consider what you did during WWII worthy of notice, but people who aren't
aware of history are doomed to repeat it.

When you make the final jump, your history will go with you, unless you
leave behind a written or oral record.

Please take advantage of the opportunity to leave behind a message that will
add to your legacy.

All the best,
mark

Hi Ben and Bob

I guess it's my time to see if this contraption will do what it promised.

First I want to thank you for inviting Mary Ann and I to join your table at  the
Pub and later being joined by Beddows. It was a great night.  By the way I
think the plaque idea for Vic Power would be just the ticket.

One more time, the Beddows did a fantastic job. It was fun. I'm only sorry
there were but four 596'ers to enjoy the reunion.
