My dear friend, Ben, who keeps me connected with the 517th
which is being more or less immortalized by you, your son and others
A couple of notes as to my
position: I am struggling with an imperfect body which includes spinal
stenosis which affects my walking. The other biggie is macular
degeneration which makes reading nearly impossible. As a result, I can
only drive locally with any comfort. Further, I use a magnifying glass to
read the mailcalls or my wife, Peanie, reads excerpts to me. The result
being that I do not attend reunions with the regularity that I once did.
The Darell Egner article in that Mailcall at this heading brought to my attention of others who are attending
less. My question is 'To what reunion did Egner refer that was short of
your desired number?' If it were close, I might try it. The best to
you...

Dad and Ben attached is a PDF file that contains an
account of the Var
river crossing and the battle for La Roquette by the CO of Company E, Captain
Walter Irwin. I acquired this report from a company called BACM
Research. Since it is written as part of a Infantry School staff
interview/monograph by Captain Irwin I do not think there are any copyright
issues. It is a very good, colorful account of the action. It
would be great if we could find out if Captain Irwin is still around to
provide further background. It was written in 1949-50 so it gives a fairly
fresh account of the action. I am sure the members of the 517th will find
this interesting reading. regards, - Wayne
