Bob, like I told you in Manhay, I'm performing some research about the battle between the Ourthe and Aisne River (Hotton-Soy-Erezee). The first battalion of the 517th PRCT played an immense role in pushing the Gruppe Bayer of the 116th Windhund division back (23 December). This action was taken by Combat Team A under the command of Colonel Boyle and Combat Team B under the command of Major Fraser. Later, the 25th December, A company was to help the 290th regiment (75th ID) in capturing "Bois de la Roumière". Any information or help concerning my research , if possible, would be appreciated

First I would like to introduce myself. My name is Ben Maciag. I am the grandson of 1st Lt. Steven E. Maciag from the 517th and the great nephew of Capt. Joseph T. McGeever of 3rd Battalion HQ who was KIA in World War II. I am writing you to inquire about any and all information related to my relatives. Things such as stories and photos would be a great surprise. Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Ben Maciag

Dear Gilles:
It was a thrill for me to read your account of visiting the railroad crossing attack scene with Lud Gibbons and finding it as I remembered it and as we pointed out the significant terrain features on your areal photos. Some useful things like railroad tracks do not change much over the years. Lt. Freeman, one of Lud's H Co. fellow officers, was killed on the vinyard side of the tracks just as Lud yelled at him to hit the dirt. I apparently was moving so fast across the tracks that the Germans in the big house didn't get me. As I may have mentioned before, I hit the dirt a number of yards across the tracks and rolled several times to see the spot I had just rolled from kick up with a burst of machine gun lead. For that reason and because my machine gun section had not followed me across the tracks I decided that my place was back on the other side and the Germans missed me again as I ran back across with Fenton, with his BAR and Zawicki, with his bazooka, blazing away at the upstairs windows of the house where the enemy fire came from. At this point Lud told me they had found the underpass. We decided rather than going over the tracks as ordered by the Bn. commander, going under them was the better part of valor. That allowed us to outflank the German defensive positions, without further casualties.
I very much appreciate your understanding the details of that attack and your and Lud's taking a trip back into history for me. Obviously I would have loved to take that walk along the tracks with you, but your account and the pictures are as close as I will get. My thanks to you both.

Last Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure to meet and speak with Mr Merle
McMorrow and his wife during the commemoration ceremony of Operation Dragoon
in Le Muy, France. Together with my wife and kids I really enjoyed being
able to meet him and having to opportunity to briefly speak about his
experiences during the battles in Southern France and later during the war.
I would like to use this opportunity to express my deepest respect for him
and all his fellow troopers and veterans who helped liberating France and
the rest of Europe. Lest we never forget!

Pat Seitz and Allan Greer
Bob: fabulous pictures! Everyone looks like
they had an incredible time (good shot of you in two, as well).
Thank you so much for sharing these and the ones from yesterday. I
forwarded them to my brother and sisters and they appreciated them very
much. Please give our best to everyone. Pat Seitz and Alan Greer

I wrote " Thank You" letters yesterday
to the Mayors of Sospel and Le Muy, to Roland and Patricia and to j.
Mickael and Eric.
We had royal treatment coming home. Mr.
Shim W. Lew, Chief of Protocol for Delta Airlines put Lud, Mardy and I in
with the VIPs. The wine and food was terrific. When the time
to leave arrived he came to get us and escorted us to our
Gate.
Hope you are having fun. Don't break
any traffic regulations. The pictures are great.
Best Wishes,
Merle |
