I discovered this site a few years back (2004 or so) when doing some research on my grandfather (Papa) Dallas Lloyd Long. I have talked to him quite a bit about his service and his experiences in trying to put together a timeline of his service. One of the big problems I have been having is finding his name in the unit's 1944 Christmas roster. Does anyone know why his name might have been omitted? He started out as a Sgt. then somewhere along the way was promoted to Warrant Officer. He was with the 517 PRCT from Toccoa, to the first jump in Italy, Nice, Bulge, and back home. I have very few pictures of him in the unit and any help would be appreciated. I am very thankful and proud of his service. I just wish I had a more complete his story of his personal experience. This site has been an incredible resource for me. Thank you to the stewards of this site. Regards, John Mullen Admin reply: John, I think the answer is that he was transferred to the 7th Army in September 1944, then was in the hospital in Soissons during early December 1944, and rejoined the 517th in January 1945. I came across this site researching my grandfather. His name was William Goldsmith. I came across a booklet 517 parachute combat team. It has a few signatures in it, one I found interesting. Jay Robertson, he was mentioned in a post from a book along with my grandfather. Does anyone on here have any stories they could share with me or possibly some links to others sites. Unfortunatelybhe passed away when he was 44 and I never had the chance to meet him or talk with him.

To all the 517th veterans, I had the most spectacular encounter with one of your heroes, Nolan Powell, and spent a couple hours speaking with him, and hearing his stories. A truly remarkable man, and even at 90 years old, his memories of his exploits during WW2 were amazing, and held me in awe to be in the company of one of our countries National Treasures. Our WW2 veterans. He showed me his medals, of course the DSC, and Purple Heart, and the book, "The Battling Buzzards", which I quickly found a hardback edition, and read quickly. I am looking forward to seeing him over the holidays, and asking him to sign my book. To Mr. Powell, and all the other veterans, both living and those taken from our proud nation, thank you. I had the privilege of serving in the 517th Engr. Co. (Light Equipment) in Viet Nam. The Units history referenced direct lineage to the 517th PIR. Just to let you know we carried on in the highest traditions set during WW2. You would be proud to know this. Thank You for your service.

What an absolute delight to find this site and the "Record of Company C, 517th". I remember the stories of my dear Uncle Frank Ubel and still hold and cherish a couple pieces of memorabilia he gave me years ago. I was amazed after reading the history of the unit that the stories he had told me about his time with the 517th were, if anything, very understated. There were also a couple details tactfully omitted from the write up, e.g., exactly how he made his weapon "operable".
