I was first aware of this unit when I watched the movie "Saints and Soldiers: Airborne Creed". I was already interested in WW2 history. The interest was sparked by the fact that a majority of the available men in my family fought in this war. My paternal grandfather was a small arms repairman in the Pacific (Army), maternal grandfather was anti-tank squad lead with the 104th Inf and a great uncle was wounded at Pearl Harbor just to name a few. I grew up close to my maternal grandfather since other one died when I was very young. My longer living grandfather told me his war stories from being in the front lines in Holland, Belgium and Germany. Anyway like I said I enjoy reading and learning WW2 history. In regards to airborne, I primarily heard about 101st and 82nd so after becoming aware of this one I wanted to check out this unit's history.

I am the daughter of Francis E. Whitaker. He was a member of the 517th Parachute Regimental Combat Team - 460-D. He passed away in November of 2002. In his honor I am putting together as much information as I can for myself and my family. Thank you for this wonderful website. Please feel free to contact me with any information available. It would be greatly appreciated.

Just checked the lists of the men who won various awards during the war, my dad won two bronze stars and two purple hearts, but his name (Raymond E. Markley) was not on the list for the bronze stars....i was wondering if anyone could tell me why....thanks.

Admin reply: Probably because recordkeeping was poor in general, or because he was wounded or transfered to another unit before the medals were awarded. Do you have documentation?
