I had the most spectacular encounter with one of your heroes, Nolan Powell, and spent a couple hours speaking with him, and hearing his stories. A truly remarkable man, and even at 90 years old, his memories of his exploits during WW2 were amazing, and held me in awe to be in the company of one of our countries National Treasures. Our WW2 veterans. He showed me his medals, of course the DSC, and Purple Heart, and the book, "The Battling Buzzards", which I quickly found a hardback edition, and read quickly. I am looking forward to seeing him over the holidays, and asking him to sign my book.
To Mr. Powell, and all the other veterans, both living and those taken from our proud nation, thank you. Thank you for being apart of the Greatest Generation, and for SAVING THE WORLD. God Bless you all.

E-mail: sfcbutco@msn.com 		I had the privilege of serving in the 517th Engr. Co. (Light Equipment) in Viet Nam. The Units history referenced direct lineage to the 517th PIR. Just to let you know we carried on in the highest traditions set during WW2. You would be proud to know this. Thank You for your service.

I remember the stories of my dear Uncle Frank Ubel and still hold and cherish a couple pieces of memorabilia he gave me years ago. I was amazed after reading the history of the unit that the stories he had told me about his time with the 517th were, if anything, very understated. There were also a couple details tactfully omitted from the write up, e.g., exactly how he made his weapon "operable".

E-mail: rmskovera@verizon.net 		On May 2, 2013, my uncle Paul Skovera(HQ/3) past away. He was 93. He joined the 517th in Italy 1844, after going AWOL from his airborne unit in Sicily, to be with his brother, my dad, Matt(HQ/3) a Toccoa man. From what I understand, Capt. Joe McGeever, after hearing what my uncle did to be with my dad, fixed it with Army brass. I am sure, I made that sound way too simple. Befo00re their jump into southern France, Capt. McGeever would again involve himself in their lives by not allowing them to jump from the same plane. My uncle had told me they where not happy about that at the time. My dad and uncle went on to serve together in the same 81MM motar squad the remainder of the war. My uncle then served and fought in Korea before retiring from the Army in the early 1970's. I often wonder if they where the only brothers to serve with the 517? Although my dad talked very little of the war, just before his death in 1986, he showed me a picture of Capt, Joe McGeever. I knew then how important that was to share with me, and I have that picture in my home today.

It follows the last battalion to volunteer for the British 6th Airborne Division and the D-Day jump and follows them across France, the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity.
