On May 2, 2013, my uncle Paul Skovera(HQ/3) past away. He was 93. He joined the 517th in Italy 1844, after going AWOL from his airborne unit in Sicily, to be with his brother, my dad, Matt(HQ/3) a Toccoa man. From what I understand, Capt. Joe McGeever, after hearing what my uncle did to be with my dad, fixed it with Army brass. I am sure, I made that sound way too simple. Befo00re their jump into southern France, Capt. McGeever would again involve himself in their lives by not allowing them to jump from the same plane. My uncle had told me they where not happy about that at the time. My dad and uncle went on to serve together in the same 81MM motar squad the remainder of the war. My uncle then served and fought in Korea before retiring from the Army in the early 1970's. I often wonder if they where the only brothers to serve with the 517? Although my dad talked very little of the war, just before his death in 1986, he showed me a picture of Capt, Joe McGeever. I knew then how important that was to share with me, and I have that picture in my home today.

Hello All

Just thought I'd let you Airborne Nuts out there that my new book is out.

It's called...

13 - Lucky For Some: The History of the 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion, available from Amazon.

It follows the last battalion to volunteer for the British 6th Airborne Division and the D-Day jump and follows them across France, the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity.

Enjoy

I am the very proud nephew of Gene Brissey. On this D-Day plus one anniversary, I am informing everyone that God has another soldier. My childhood hero passed away this morning at his home in New Mexico.

As June 6th comes around once again, I look back on my father that severed with the 517th Parachute Combat Team, The Battling Buzzards. I am honored to be a Navy veteran of over 10 years and always talk about my father who severed in WWII. I have a lot of his original letters and other items from his time in the war. I always try and reach out to find stories that he never told of his times in France. Thanks Dad!

Hello,
My name is Jim and I am a volunteer at the Arizona State Veteran Home here in Phoenix. So is my 1 year old golden retriever, Leroy. I have met many memorable veterans at the home over the years but have become rather close to an individual who answers to the name Earl "Dan'l" Boone. He was 2nd Battalion, F Company. He didn't want me to contact this site on his behalf but I don't listen too well. Mr. Boone is doing very well here at the home and is quite popular. We often visit for hours at a time and discuss anything from sports to politics. He is quite the character. The other day I drove into the parking lot of the home. I hadn't had a haircut in a several months. As I walked up to him he said to me he thought he saw my truck drive by but thought a girl was driving it! He is very proud of his service with the 517th and proudly wears his paratrooper hat everyday and shares the good stories with me. I don't know if Mr. Boone has an email address but if you would like to say 'hi' to him you can email me and I will get the message to him. God bless.
Jim

Love this site, as it helped me learn more about my father's uncle, as I am working on our family tree. I especially appreciate the service that all of these men put forth, to protect our country. Thank you so much.
And to my Great-Uncle Jesse, I am sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you, but I am proud of you just the same.
