Name: Del Hawley From: Oxford, Mississippi E-mail: dhawley@bus.olemiss.edu |
My dad, Alvin (Al) Hawley was in C Company of the 517th. He was a machine gunner, and was with the unit until he was wounded on Christmas eve in the Battle of the Bulge, and then after two month of recovery was attached to the unit again for a short time until he was discharged with disability. He is strong and well and living where he grew up in Flushing Michigan with my mother, June. They were married while he was in training. I learned of this website from him. He had not talked much about his time in WWII, but I knew enough to know that it was an exceptional experience for a 19-20 year old man that did much to shape his later life, and mine at least indirectly. I am very proud of him and of humbled by the level of his service and sacrifice. He does not have email, but if you would like to contact him I would be happy to help you do that.

Wonderful site. I believe a correction is needed. In your decorations.htm page, you list 'Pfc Richmo E. Weegar' as a Silver Medal recipient. I am sure this should be 'Richard Weegar'. I am not sure of his middle initial, but am assuming the 'E.' is correct. Dick Weegar hailed from Colton, NY and I was fortunate enough to have known this bonafide hero. I want to be sure he is correctly credited for all he did for his country... Admin reply: Page has been corrected. Thanks for the catch.

Name: Dannie Perry From: Rockville Indiana E-mail: dannieperry@att.net |
My father, Floyd R. Perry, served in Hdq Co. 2nd Battallion 517th and my brother and I were unable to verify this because of the destroyed records in St. Louis in '73. Our father died in the Indianapolis Roudebush VA Hospital July 1, 1961 of a Staph infection following back surgery. Just 2 weeks ago we located a copy of his service record and honorable discharge at the Indiana Archives office and were told that due to his Purple Heart w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster for injuries recieved in Belgium that we are eligible for remission of fees for 124 college credits. We would like to get our father added to your various recognition sites, ie; Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Algeria, Operation Dragoon, EAME Theatre Ribbon w/5 Bronze Stars; Naples/Fogia, Rome/Arno, Rhineland, Central Europe, Ardennes.
