I am looking for a 517th combat patch for my fathers Class-A coat. It will be put in a glass case at the local armory. I have just about all his medals. It should look pretty nice when completed. He was a member of Headquarters Company. I recently ran on to some of his pictures.

Admin reply: Pvt. Garn A. Whatcott was in HQ Company, 1st Bn.

Ervin Daniel Schmidt was my uncle (Dad's brother) and was in 517th Company F. He was killed January 8, 1945, in Battle of the Bulge, leaving behind a very special wife, Mildred (Mil). She passed away in October, 2009 and was such a wonderful woman. I miss her dearly and her stories of how much she loved Erv. My Uncle John, my dad and I would love to find people who knew my Uncle Ervin. Thank you all for your service and I hope we can make sure that the many, many sacrifices that have been made are not ever forgotten.

Great website Ben! Nancy referred me to this site The stories and pictures are are a great testimony to those who served. My Dad (Alfred Lally) served in Company B 304th Army infantry regiment in the European theater 1943-45. I've been reading Jonathan Gawne's book "Finding your father's war" recently so your website is giving me more inspiration to research his experience. You have a great family and I was fortunate to grow up with 2 heroes of WW2 living on the same street!

Excellent website - came here looking for info about 460th PFAB during operation Dragoon. Would be great to get very detailed information about which sticks landed where during the drop and what the hour by hour operations were (or as close as) for the operation during the first 3 days. Is there a war diary available which would give this info with reported map positions ? If anyone can advise I'd be very grateful. I own a 75mm Pack Howitzer which is maintained to fire blank ammo for commemorative purposes and have an interest in the use of this equipment throughout WW2. Tim

Hi..Still looking for anyone who may have served with my father, Alvin J. Schultz. Served in a Special Forces Unit of the 517th. Worked with the French Resistance behind German lines. Very reluctant to tell me much about his missions. Did say he once went after a French official who was working with the Germans. I believe this may have been Philippe Henriot and he was using the name of Alphonso on a Spanish work permit. Also mentioned doing the Jitterbug with the Jitterbug champion of Chattanoga Tennessee on the beach on D-Day and stopping the war for a few minutes as the Germans stopped shooting from the pill boxes..Some photos he has mentioned the names of Jimmy Pieshong and a Sgt. Hatcher. Told me no records were kept of his missions and what records there was burned up in St.Louis..Croix de Guerre unit citation and 4 Bronze Battle Stars. Would like to know what battles the stars were from and any other information someone might be able to provide. Any help or direction would be very much appreciated. Thanks

My dad, John Bradovich of Chisholm, Minnesota, served in the 517th, Headquarters division, in a demolition platoon. He fought in the invasion of Italy, jumped in Operation Dragoon and was wounded near La Motte,France. He recovered and went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. Sgt. Sturgeon was his platoon leader. He is 85, still living in Chisholm with my mother, Rose, married now for over 62 years. Does anyone remember my father? I spoke to him tonite, Veterans Day, he reminisced about Lt. Alecki, saying he was the best officer he'd ever known.
